A significant section of The Body Shop’s customers are loyal to the organization because of the ethical stand it adopts. There is evidence, however, to suggest that there may be a degree of public relations gloss covering much of the company’s ethical position in its history and perhaps not quite as much substance as many customers believe:

The Body Shop’s official position on animal testing, for example, is outlined in its 2005 “Values Report:”

The company refuses to buy any ingredient that has been tested on animals for cosmetic purposes after 31 December 1990, but points out that most of the ingredients used in cosmetic and toiletry products have been animal tested for some purpose at some time in their history so it would be near impossible to sell products whose ingredients had never been tested on animals.174

Although The Body Shop may not itself use ingredients that have been tested on animals, it is clearly benefiting from the knowledge gained by others who have previously used animals to test the same ingredients and ensure they are safe for human use:
